Montevideo hosts international conference on drugs

Various international events on drugs that will bring together experts from different countries will be held in Montevideo from Monday 9 to Friday 13 February. The meeting of the South American Council of UNASUR stand, the bi-regional conference COPOLAD and high-level meeting of CELAC-EU part of the busy schedule.

On Monday 9 pm an extraordinary meeting of the South American Council of the Union of South American Nations (to be held UNASUR ) on the World Drug Problem in NH Columbia, in which issues will be addressed to the common regional position for the Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly ( UNGASS 2016).

On Tuesday 10, the bi-regional Conference will be held Cooperation Programme between Latin America and the European Union Drug Policy ( COPOLAD ), at the Radisson Victoria Plaza, which will be chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic, Luis Porto, accompanied by the co-chair of the European Union (EU) Mechanism of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the EU, Janis Bekmanis, and the head of the Unit of Regional Programs for Latin America and the Caribbean of the European Commission, Jean Paul JOULIA.

The meeting will discuss the challenges and also close cooperation in the field of drug policy and the contribution it has made ​​to that effect COPOLAD in the last four years.

It will also work with regard to the evidence as a basis for policy formulation in reducing the demand for drugs; on progress in reducing drug supply (alternative development and exchange of intelligence for the control of criminal organizations) and will discuss different approaches and transverse axes of work COPOLAD .

Also on Tuesday 10 at the time 14:00, on the first floor of the Executive Tower, proceed to signing the Commitment Letter for the implementation of the project “Drug Observatories Network of Member States of UNASUR” between the National Drugs Board and the General Secretariat of the UNASUR .

The document will be signed by the deputy secretary of the Presidency of the Republic and President of the National Drug Board (JND) , Diego Canepa and Secretary General of UNASUR , Ernesto Samper.

The engagement letter provides implementation guidelines for participation and the proper use of the resources and tends to effective management and control of that project approved by the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs by resolution 2013.

CELAC-EU meeting

Meanwhile, on Wednesday 11, the Seventeenth Meeting of High Level Mechanism will be held CELAC-EU , at the Radisson Victoria Plaza.
The meeting reviewed the status of the drug problem in different countries will takeCELAC and the European Union will discuss various issues and challenges and the improvements in contributing to global drug problem; social and economic consequences of drug abuse consequences.

Uruguay, as host country, will chair the event COPOLAD And CELAC-EU through the deputy secretary of the Presidency, Diego Canepa, Deputy Foreign Minister Luis Porto, and in his absence, by Ambassador Milton Romani, adviser to the Foreign Ministry on rights humans and drugs. The head of delegation of Uruguay, is the secretary general of the JND , Julio Calzada.
