The United States and Jordan Sign a Memorandum of Understanding on U.S. Assistance

February 3, 2015
When His Majesty, King Abdullah II of Jordan visited Washington in December 2014, President Obama announced that the United States would renew its memorandum of understanding (MOU) of assistance to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan at increased levels of support.

Today, Secretary of State John Kerry and Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh signed this new MOU, which reflects our strategic partnership and the United States’ firm commitment to Jordan’s stability.

The United States and Jordan share a commitment to promoting regional security and stability, furthering Jordan’s economic development, and advancing social, political, and economic reform in Jordan.

The United States recognizes Jordan’s increased immediate needs resulting from regional unrest, the efforts Jordan is undertaking at the forefront of the fight against ISIL and other extremist ideology and terrorism, the influx of refugees from Syria and Iraq, the disruption of foreign energy supplies, and other unprecedented strains.

This MOU reflects the intention to increase U.S. assistance to the Government Jordan from $660 million to $1 billion per year for the years 2015-2017, subject to the appropriation and availability of funds for these purposes, to support the long-term development and security efforts initiated under the previous MOU.

The increase for the period of FY 2015 to FY 2017 is designed to address Jordan’s short-term, extraordinary needs, including those related to regional instability and rising energy costs.
