Thrilling athletics at AWST 2016 concludes

SHARJAH, 6th February, 2016  — The athletics competitions of the Arab Women Sports Tournament 2016 (AWST), held in Sharjah, concluded on Friday.

Meanwhile, basketball, table tennis and volleyball games will continue as part of the tournament.

In basketball, Bahrain’s Al Najma club defeated the Emirati Bani Yas Club 74-57, while Sharjah Ladies Club’s (SLC) beat the Algerian Olympic team 80-54, and Jordan’s Orthodox team won 55-47 against Qatar’s Ladies team.

In the table tennis semifinals, Lebanon’s Al Nadawa Al Qatamiya Club took a 3-0 win against the Algerian Women’s Sports Club, while Jordan’s Orthodox Club beat Al Bahrain Club 3-0 and finally won 3-2 against Al Nadawa Al Qatamiya.

The volleyball competitions saw the UAE Al Wasl Club win 3-0 against the Jordanian Olympic Club, and in the second match, Al Qalamoon Lebanese Club defeated SLC’s team 3-0.

Egyptian Redha Adel won a gold medal for her performance in the athletics competition, while Emirati Hanan Ibrahim won a silver medal and Omani Maha bint Thani won a bronze medal in the javelin throw.

In the Heptathlon Javelin Throw, Omani Moudhi bint Abdullah won the gold medal, while Algerian’s Katia Meqran won the silver medal and Egypt’s Asma Mohammed Ali took the bronze medal. In the 4 x 400 meter race, Algeria won the gold medal, Bahrain silver and the UAE bronze.

In the hammer throw, Algerian’s Zoweina Bu Zowiera won the gold medal, the UAE’s Wedad Irbahim won the silver medal and UAE’s Hanon Ibrahim took the bronze medal.

In the 5000m race, Bahraini Punto Edaw won the gold medal, Yemeni Nahla Ahmed Ali won the silver and her team member, Malayeen Ali, won the bronze medal. In the 200m race, Algerian Suhair Bu Ali took the gold medal, Bahrain’s Bushra Sharifa won the silver medal, and Algerian Nadia Ramoon won the bronze medal.

In the 5000m race, Emirati Mira Al Mazimi won the gold medal, and her compatriot Mariam Sulaiman won a silver medal, while Yemen’s Intisar Mohsen got the bronze medal. In the Heptathlon long jump, Egyptian Asma Mohammed won the gold, Algerian Katia Megran won the silver and the bronze medal went to Omani Moudhi bint Abdullah.

In the heptathlon competitions, Algerian Katia Megran won the gold medal, Egyptian Asma Mohammed won the silver medal, while the bronze medal went to Omani Moudhi bint Abdullah.

In the 800m race, Bahraini Marta Herbano won the gold medal, Algerian Nariman Omara got the silver medal and Emirati Ruqaya Mohammed won the bronze medal. In the Triple Jump, no player won the bronze medal while Algerian Katia Awqasi bagged the gold medal and her fellow national, Khadija Graitli, won the silver medal.

The third Arab Women Sports Tournament 2016 is being held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.
