Paris attacks a reminder of the importance of opposing extremism

“Liberté, égalité, fraternité – liberty, equality, fraternity. Just as the national motto of France could also be the motto of the Nordic Region, so we see the attacks on the people of Paris as an attack on ourselves and on our values here at home,” says the President of the Nordic Council Höskuldur Þórhallsson, adding that opposing extremism has never been more important.

“The laying of flowers outside French embassies across the Nordic Region and the outpouring of sympathy on social media demonstrate that the terrorist attacks in France touch each and every one of us.

Nevertheless, I think it’s difficult to find words to express the horror of seeing innocent civilians lose their lives to senseless acts of terrorism,” Þórhallsson continues.

“Paris is home to people from across the globe, including the Nordic Region. My hope is that no one now contrives that such acts of terrorism have anything whatsoever to do with religion. This is about senseless acts of violence and a complete lack of respect for human life. Every religion values peace and respects human life, so we must never allow terrorists to make us believe that terrorism is a religious act.

We must oppose extremism

“The Paris attacks are a reminder that we have to oppose extremism in our Nordic societies as well. Nordic Council politicians agree that this has never been more important,” Höskuldur Þórhallsson says.

The Nordic Council supports the Nordic governments, which have concluded an agreement on strengthened Nordic co-operation to prevent radicalization.

The Nordic Council also emphasizes that these efforts also involve local authorities and other social actors.

“It’s vital that we prevent the recruitment of young people from the Nordic Region into extremist networks.

Working together more closely on this common challenge can help to prevent similar attacks from taking place in our Region,” concludes the President of the Nordic Council.
