Nordic sports summit in September

Politics and sport are linked – although some think that the two should not have anything to do with each other. Nordic politicians, sports organisations, and national sports associations will gather for a sports summit on the initiative of the Nordic Council in Denmark this September.

The objective of the summit is to strengthen Nordic co-operation in the field of sport in areas where there are common challenges.

“It deals in part, but by no means exclusively with issues concerning elite sport,” stresses Jorodd Asphjell, Chairman of the Nordic Council Culture and Sports Committee.

He highlights sport as a shortcut to integration and inclusion, as well as the public health aspects of sport as typical examples of the major social issues that concern even those who are not interested in sport and exercise themselves.

Although the Nordic countries already enjoy successful co-operation when it comes to sport, the broader social issues have rarely been discussed at a more general level. During the sports summit, participants including the Nordic ministers for sport, key politicians, the President of the International Olympic Committee, and representatives from a number of national and international sports organisations will discuss concrete new joint proposals and ideas.

Match fixing and anti-doping, the link between democracy and sport, good governance in sports organisations, and the link between gambling and sports funding are some of the issues that will be discussed at the summit.

The summit is being held in Aalborg on 24 and 25 September.
