Hungary – Increasing numbers of Immigrants are moving from Belgrade towards Hungary

On Hungarian M1 television’s Thursday evening current affairs programme, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said that “Increasing numbers of immigrants are moving from Belgrade towards Hungary because of disinformation from non-governmental organisations about the opening of the Hungarian border”.

György Bakondi said that “At the same time, many people are currently in Serbia in extremely bad conditions and without heating, and are attempting to forcibly cross the border in groups, because they feel their situation cannot get any worse”.

“These groups are always assisted by people smugglers”, he added.

“The first group of 500 ‘border trackers’ is being sworn in today, and they will begin their first tour of duty along the Serbian border, as this continues to be the main route for migrants”, he continued.

“In addition, migrants are also attempting to enter the EU via other routes: for instance, they are trying to get to Lithuania and Poland through Belarus, and into Hungary through Romania and Ukraine”, the Chief Security Advisor told the press.

Speaking on Kossuth Radio’s “180 Minutes” programme, Mr. Bakondi also said that migration pressure on the Hungarian border has not fallen, despite the extremely cold weather. Along the entire length of the Hungarian-Serbian border, 80–100 people a day are attempting to enter the country.

“Given the conditions, police and military personnel are performing in exemplary fashion, and their efforts are being assisted by the provision of warm shelters, hot drinks and special winter clothing”, he added.
