Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration To Be Held In Vienna

IOM and OSCE to host conference on Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration on 14 December in Vienna

VIENNA,  – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) will host a panel discussion dedicated to the future development of the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, on 14 December 2016, at 14:30 , at the Hofburg Congress Center, in Vienna.

The event, ahead of International Migrants’ Day 2016 (18 December), will explore future steps and challenges for the upcoming negotiations aimed at the adoption of the Compact in 2018 and how the two organizations can join forces in forging a broad-based consensus to this end.

Following the United Nations’ General Assembly Declaration on High-Level Plenary Meeting on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants, the Global Compact, the first comprehensive framework on international migration, will set out a range of principles and commitments among the United Nations’ Member States and will enhance global governance and co-ordination on the issue. The development and adoption of this document is expected to dominate the international migration policy agenda over the next two years.

The OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier, the IOM Deputy Director General Laura Thompson, Ambassador Eberhard Pohl, the Chairperson of the OSCE Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Germany to the OSCE, and Ambassador Florian Raunig, Head of the Task Force for the 2017 OSCE Austrian Chairmanship, will open the event.

Representatives of delegations to the OSCE and civil society, together with experts and practitioners are expected to participate in the event. The screening of short movies, in the framework of the PLURAL + Youth Video Festival on Migration, Diversity and Social Inclusion, will complement the discussion, offering further insight on this topical issue.

On demand interviews or statements will take place from 15:00 to 15:30

The event will be preceded by the screening of the movie “Fuocoammare”, on 13 December at 20:00 at the Italian Cultural Institute, and will be followed by the film “Wallah – je te jure”, on 14 December at 19:00 at Top Kino, as part of the Global Migration Film Festival.

Media representatives wishing to attend the conference are kindly requested to register by sending an email to by 14 December, Wednesday11:00. For more information please contact Mersiha Causevic Podzic at
