Christ the Redeemer is voted best tourist attraction in the country

The Rio de Janeiro is on the rise among millions of travelers with Internet access. It was the 9th most voted among worldwide destinations. In South America, it was second only to Machu Picchu in Peru.

In Brazil Rio de Janeiro was elected the best tourist attraction in the country, 2nd the Centro Cultural Banco do Brazil, in downtown Rio; followed by the Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasilia.

The vote was announced on Tuesday and is part of an annual award based on millions of reviews and comments made by users of Trip Advisor travel website.

A total of 700 awards, including destinations in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the South Pacific, the United Kingdom and the United States were announced.

Rio de Janeiro is the second city most visited by Brazilians, behind São Paulo, according to a study by the Ministry of Tourism.

Argentines and Americans rank as most foreigners that visit the state capital, majority of them for pleasure.
