Environment Minister Sarney Filho considers that government actions have secured the protection of the biome: “State presence in the Amazon is very strong and results are being felt already. The main reason behind containing deforestation remains command and control”, he stated.

All states in the Legal Amazon region have shown reduction, with Tocantins (56%) standing out with the highest rate. It is followed by the state of Roraima (37%), Acre (32%) and Pará (31%). In addition, the survey indicates that in July this year, 61% of deforestation occurred in private areas or under various other ownership stages.

Minister Sarney Filho highlighted the importance of budgetary recovery of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). According to him, for the first time, Amazon Fund resources were earmarked for additional command and control actions.

Encouraging sustainable development in the region also received emphasis. Sarney Filho explained that, in addition to inspection operations, measures need to be established, capable of strengthening the economy and environmental conservation in the region. “We are deploying a sustainable model that values the standing forest”, he guaranteed
